Google Apps has been essential to cost savings for my companies as well as organizations that I consult for and have implemented it as a solutions. I was able to save time and money with Google-powered email, IM and calendar to the tune of $80,000 for my own companies and over $300,000 for my clients. The beautiful thing is the seamless integration with my clients brands. No one has any idea that Google is the solutions provider other than those internal to the organization. Google Apps features:

- Essential messaging apps – Gmail and Google Calendar are included.
- Continuous innovation – Put the web’s rapid pace of innovation to work for your business.
- Lower cost – No hardware, software or patches, so you save money.
- Universal access – Access your data from anywhere. Use Gmail or another client. Connect with IMAP, POP, Microsoft Outlook or from
mobile devices.
- Enterprise-class service – Google Apps includes a 99.9% uptime SLA.* Phone support is available for critical issues.
- Secure infrastructure – Multiple layers of protection keep your business data safe and secure.
- Get control of spam – Advanced filters keep spam from your inbox so you can focus on messages that matter.
- Keep all your important email – 25 GB of storage per user lets you keep just about anything you think may be important down the road.
- Unified communications – Email, instant message, and make high-quality voice and video communication without launching a separate
application.
- Voice and video chat from your inbox
- IM from your inbox
- Find old messages instantly – Google search technology is built in, so you can find emails and instant message conversations quickly.
- Find emails fast
- Prevent data leaks – Create custom inbound and outbound policies to keep sensitive information safe with Email Security.
- Interoperability – Sync your Microsoft Outlook email and contacts with Gmail
- Get people together easily – Just pick a time (based on when people are free) and enter meeting details. Google Calendar will send
invitations and keep track of RSVPs.
- Schedule a meeting
- Share project calendars – Share whole calendars company-wide or with specific people. Coworkers can have editing rights and see
shared events alongside their own schedules.
- Share a calendar
- Show event information in context – Embed an internal calendar in Google Sites or publicly on your website, no programming required.
- Show a calendar in Google Sites

    * Essential collaboration apps – Google Docs, Google Video and Google Sites are included.
* Continuous innovation – Put the web’s rapid pace of innovation to work for your business.

“dotProject is a web-based project management application, designed to provide project layout and control functions. To understand dotProject, you need to understand what project management is all about. Project Management is about the structuring of a series of tasks and the schedule associated with those tasks, to achieve an outcome. The nature of those tasks and the schedules and any associated functions (such as project planning, contract negotiation, risk management, cost management and so on) will depend greatly on the nature of the projects that you can management. dotProject aims to provide the project manager with a tool to manage tasks, schedules, communication and sharing. But beware, dotProject will not be all things to all project managers – you may find that other FOSS tools are more appropriate to your particular requirements. You will need to do some investigation and testing to find the product that best suits your requirements. dotProject assumes that you understand the basic concepts of project management and what it is that you are trying to achieve in looking for a project management tool (dotProject.com).”

I have performed several installations of the dotProject project management system for use by my previous construction company as well as for my five of my clients. The first installation I did with dotProject was on my own stand alone server as a solutions to achieve real-time communication with the teams in the field. When you are operating internationally, the most difficult part is access to information in a timely manner. Schedule changes, document management, change orders, field manuals, and many other parameters that are integral to a smooth project flow are easily addressed with this system. I then wanted to see how Godaddy would treat the install. The install went quickly on Godaddy because Linux, Apache, PHP, mySQL are already already loaded. Creating the database, uploading the tar.gz file and unpacking it, running the install file from a browser, and configuring it to tie to the database that I created and the install was done in less than an 30 minutes with the base package. Installing additional modules and changing themes to meet the client’s needs and brand identity obviously took more time, however, it is still the most cost effective solution on the market.

Below are some screenshots of a typical installation of dotProject:

“vtiger CRM is a full-featured, 100% Open Source CRM software ideal for small and medium businesses. vtiger CRM is a widely used product with thousands of users in dozens of countries. It has a vibrant community of users driving the product forward, and contributing to it’s development. Over a million copies of vtiger CRM have been downloaded by users. vtiger CRM provides a complete set of CRM capabilities, such as: Sales force automation, Customer support & service, Marketing automation, Inventory management, Activity management, Security management, Calendaring, and E-mail integration. vtiger CRM provides many extensibility and customization features to enable your CRM solution to meet the needs of your business. In cases where you need new functionality to be added, the vtiger team provides customization services to meet the need. vtiger CRM also provides, enterprise grade business productivity enhancement add-ons, Customer Portal , Outlook Plug-in for Microsoft Outlook users, Office Plug-in for Microsoft Word users, and Thunderbird Extension for Thunderbird mail users. All these add-ons are part of the 100% open source vtiger CRM project available in SourceForge.net.”

I have performed several installations of this CRM System as a robust alternative to the two powerhouses, Salesforce and Goldmine (and in my opinion, vTiger due to it’s cost effectiveness is a more viable solution for small and medium sized businesses). The first installation I did with vTiger was on my own stand alone server with dual 1.8 Ghz Xeons (installed linux, MySQL, apache, php 5, and vTiger) to set it up as an local intranet behind my firewall. I then wanted to see how Godaddy would treat the install. The install went quickly on Godaddy because Linux, Apache, PHP, mySQL are already already loaded. Creating the database, uploading the tar.gz file and unpacking it, modifying the php.ini file in the root (actually, on the Linux box, you have to create another file called php5.ini in the root), running the install.php file from a browser, and configuring it to tie to the database that I created and the install was done in less than an hour.

Below are some screenshots of a typical installation of vTiger:
